After an 11-day layoff, the Washington baseball team finally got back on the diamond last night and ended with a doubleheader split against Fairfield.
As heard on KCII, in game one Kole Hinrichsen didn’t need much run support, but he got just that in a 6-0 methodical win. The senior was humming along on the bump throwing a complete game shutout giving up just four hits and one walk while striking out six. Head Coach Nathan Miller tells KCII Sports the senior hurler was in complete control. “He dealt and that is what he is capable of. He mixed three pitches well and he was right around mid-80s in velocity. He did a fantastic job keeping hitters off-balance and our defense was outstanding.” The Demons picked up a run in the first after a leadoff double by Brant Stout and he came around to score on a wild pitch. They scratched across a run in each of the fourth and fifth inning headlined by a sac fly from Stout and RBI groundout from Ethan Patterson. Insurance came piling in for Washington in the sixth with three more runs including a two-run single from Brady Knutson. Knutson finished that game 2-for-3 and all nine Demon batters reached safely.
In game two pitcher Caden Jones returned the favor for the Trojans, as he tossed six plus innings of two run ball en route to a 5-2 victory for the road team. Fairfield tallied four runs in the first two innings including a deep blast from Austin Simpson. The lead was cut to 4-2 in the third when Luke Turner delivered an opposite field double that scored a pair. The Demons threatened in the later frames but could not cash in, as the Trojans managed the split. Chase McDole took the loss on the bump while Patterson tossed three innings without giving up an earned run in his varsity debut. Stout was 2-for-4 at the dish to pace the offense.
Washington moves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Southeast Conference play. They get back on the diamond Monday traveling to Keokuk in a doubleheader that can be heard on KCII.
