A weak tornado touched down near Kalona Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service, an EF0 tornado touched down north of Kalona city limits. An EF0 tornado is classified as a tornado with peak speeds of 65-85 miles per hour. It touched down at 8:13 p.m. and was only on the ground for a few minutes before dispersing. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says Kalona was mostly unaffected, “Within the city limits, we really just kind of got some sprinkles. No real winds to speak of or anything, so we were very fortunate that the cell stayed north of our community.”
The tornado was estimated to be about 20 yards wide and traveled .3 miles.
