The Iowa Mennonite School baseball team will open the season Monday hosting the Wapello Indians. This will be the third attempt IMS has made to get their season started after games against Danville and Louisa-Muscatine were postponed due to weather. IMS is coming off of their second straight district championship and substate appearance a season ago, with an overall mark of 16-10. Offensively, IMS returns four of their top five hitters by the numbers, including Eli Ours who hit .362 as a freshman to lead a team that hit .260 overall. On the mound, IMS returns their 1-2-3 punch in the starting rotation with seniors Blake Bontrager and Trevor Leyden and junior Drew Blauvelt. A year ago the three combined for a 12-7 overall record, 100 innings thrown and an ERA just over three.
The Wapello Indians have had a large part of their early season scheduled also washed away by weather. Of their nine scheduled games, Wapello has played just three with a 1-2 overall record. Last time out they were beaten by Wilton 15-0. For the year, Wapello is led by Joel Chaney and his .500 average. Chaney also leads the Wapello pitching staff with a 1-0 record and 5.25 ERA. These two teams met a season ago with IMS taking a 4-3 win. Varsity game begins at 7p.m. at Iowa Mennonite School.
