It started out rough and at times the chances of coming out of Fairfield with a win were bleak, but late inning magic in the nightcap propelled the Washington baseball team to a crucial doubleheader split of the Trojans.
In game one the wheels fell off early, as the Trojans put up 10 runs in the first and it never got any closer in a 15-2 Demon defeat in five innings. Washington managed just two hits including a single by Luke Turner and Brady Knutson with a RBI double. Chase McDole started on the bump and gave up six runs to record the loss.
Now, let’s fast forward to the good part. Trailing 9-5 in the nightcap heading into the final frame the Demons exploded for seven runs and held on to win 12-9. The offense had a complete 180 from the opener, busting out for 12 hits led by a 4-for-5 performance from Cade Hennigan and one run knocked in. Turner had three hits and three RBI. McDole got revenge picking up the win recording the final three outs and Ethan Patterson went four innings of three run ball.
The split keeps the Demons’ Southeast Conference title hopes a live, as they are now 11-4 overall and 8-4 in the league with four SEC games remaining. Fairfield has six remaining with a conference record of 7-3 and 9-3 overall. Washington gets back on the diamond tonight hosting Williamsburg.
