It was a long time coming for the Iowa Mennonite softball team but on Tuesday they broke through with their first wins of the season in big fashion, sweeping Mediapolis in Kalona by scores of 16-9 and 14-3. In game one, it was Mediapolis who took control early, hitting around in the top of the first and jumping out to a 6-0 lead. IMS responded by scoring 13 straight to take a lead they would not give up the rest of the night. IMS pounded out 16 hits for their 16 runs including a three for three night for Katelinn Swantz and a two run homer for Suzanna Yoder. Leah Bontrager recorded the win for IMS going the distance.
In game two, IMS picked up where they left off, scoring five times in the first and batting around. They would add single runs in the second and fourth before hitting around again in the fifth for five more and ending the game early in the sixth. Suzanna Yoder and Mia Graber each had two hits. Bontrager was terrific, going all six innings in the circle, allowing just three runs and striking out eight. After the game, IMS head coach Kathryn Ney talked about the breakout night. “We got the monkey off of our backs. The kids had been feeling it trying to get that first win. Tonight we finally got some base-runners. We started to hit and we started to score.”
With the sweep, IMS improves to 2-14 on the year.
