Whether you’re biking on the Kewash Nature Trail or walking on the pavement that surrounds Lake Darling, it’s important to prepare to stay safe.

Heat can be the biggest threat when enjoying the outdoors. According to the National Safety Council, 87 people died of heat exposure nationally in 2017. The best ways to combat the heat are staying hydrated and knowing the signs of heat exhaustion, which include nausea, fatigue, and rapid heart rate. Heat exhaustion can evolve into heat stroke if not managed properly. Park Ranger at Lake Darling State Park Zach Haworth says a little preparation can go a long way, “I’d encourage folks to just use caution as they’re going out there. It’s important for them to have an idea of how far they’re going to be walking or running. Make sure you have adequate hydration. It’s always a great idea to have a cell phone with you if you needed to call for help. Maybe some items like sunscreen or bug spray things like that as well.”

Haworth adds that there are trail maps available at Lake Darling State Park to help plan your hike.
