Soil conditions in southeast Iowa have more surplus moisture than the state’s average this week. According to the USDA, in southeast Iowa topsoil moisture 49% is surplus, 48% is adequate, and 3% is short. The state’s topsoil moisture is rated at 31% surplus and 68% adequate. In southeast Iowa the subsoil moisture is 46% surplus and 52% adequate while the state is 37% surplus and 62% adequate. According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, at this time last year 24% of Iowa was abnormally dry and 9.25% was in moderate drought. In the last week pasture conditions across the state continued to improve. They’re now rated at 69% good to excellent, although feedlots were muddy after recent rainfalls.
