A new Washington Police Officer is now officially on patrol, and he has four legs. K-9 Officer Dex was officially sworn in to duty at this week’s city council meeting by Mayor Jaron Rosien, “Dex has declared and affirmed that he will protect and serve the citizens of Washington, assist his handler in enforcing the law, to search for lost persons, to find illegal drugs, to track suspects, and to be a good will for the City of Washington Police Department. Congratulations, both of you.” Dex is partnered with officer Seth Adam. The pair went through six weeks of training in Indiana. Adam explained that Dex was the first dog selected at training, “We actually really lucked out. The selection process is based on registration date, and I was the first one to register so we had the top pick. And about everyone wanted Dex.”

The department’s other K9 officer Ultro retired earlier this summer with officer Brett Sorrells; on their last radio call a farewell was said, “105, it is with great pleasure we announce that on May 31st, 2019, at 15:05, after 30 years of service Officer Brett Sorrells of the Washington Police Department badge number 105 is retiring along with his K-9 partner Ultro, and giving their final 10-7. We all wish you the best, the best of good luck and good health, and this new chapter of your life as you ride off into retirement. May you spend your days catching the big fish, boating in the Ozarks, and spending lots of time with your family. We thank you for your service, 105 is 10-42.” Sorrells responded, “The pleasure has been mine.”

The purchase of Dex, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois, and training was funded in large part by donations from the community. He is trained in drug detection, tracking, and suspect apprehension.
