KCII News Director Sally Hart earned first place in the flag photo contest that’s put on annually by Farm Bureau Financial Services.

The photo is of United States veteran Mike Orris presenting the flag at the Memorial Day service at Washington High School.

Hart says it was Orris’ moment, she just happened to be there to capture it, “I was covering Memorial Day services at the high school when Kim Reynolds spoke. I try to go every year, I have even before I was a reporter, gone to Memorial Day services every year. Sometimes when you’re taking photos, you just see it before you take the photo, and you just know that it’s a good one. And I saw Mike Orris carrying the flag, and I just knew that was a special moment for somebody who has served our country.”

The first place prize is an American flag that flew over the capitol on the 4th of July. Hart says she plans on gifting the flag to Orris as a token of her appreciation.
