Two-time defending class 3A state champions Davenport Assumption (30-4) got all they could handle last night at Dick Sojka Memorial Field, as the Washington baseball team gave them a scare but the Knights ended on the plus side of a 2-1 affair in a district 9 final.
With both starting pitchers supporting a sub-1.0 ERA a pitcher’s duel was expected and that’s exactly what fans got to enjoy last night. Assumption’s Brandon Schlichting and Washington’s Kole Hinrichsen went toe-to-toe all night and both put together six solid innings. Hinrichsen gave up just two runs on six hits and struck out seven Knight batters. Schlichting threw a two-hitter while surrendering one run. The Demons were the road team on the scoreboard and they opened the scoring in the fourth when Trevor Quigley had an opposite field knock that plated Luke Turner for a 1-0 lead. The Knights wasted no time finding the equalizer, as they tallied a RBI sac fly from Jayson Willers in the bottom half of the frame. The back breaker came in the sixth when Jeremy McIntosh had a two out hit that scored Seth Adrian and proved to be the game winner. Nick Gottila recorded the save retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh. Brant Stout had the only other hit for the Demons.
Washington closes the 2019 campaign with a 22-9 season and they bid farewell to Hinrichsen, Stout, Cade Hennigan, Chase McDole, and Mitchell Driscoll.
