Iowa is honoring 485 Century and Heritage Farm Families at the Iowa State Fair and five are from Washington County. Farms that have been owned by the same family for 100 years receive the Century Farm recognition and Heritage Farms are those that have been in the same family for 150 years or more. The farm of Thomas H. Hoskins near Brighton originated in 1868 and will be given Heritage Farm recognition, as will the Robert A. Kennedy farm of rural Washington that began in 1859. Washington County Farms receiving the Century Farm recognition include Karla Emde-Rossow of Wellman, Steve and Kathy Gerdes of Ainsworth, and Merritt and Evelyn Yeggy of Riverside. To date, Iowa has had more than 20,000 Century Farms and 1,360 Heritage Farms recognized.
