Following an incident at the Washington County Jail in May, a man has pled guilty to assaults on persons in certain occupations. On Wednesday a jury trial was scheduled for Deng Michael Akuar of Des Moines. According to the Washington County Communications Office, on May 21st there was a fight at the Washington County Jail involved Akuar. He filed written pleas of guilty for assault on persons in certain occupations and assault on persons in certain occupations causing bodily injury. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and nearly $3,000 in fines and court costs. He was originally being held in the Washington County Jail for multiple charges in Polk County from an incident in April. At that time he was charged with two counts of harassment in the first degree, driving while barred, operating while under the influence, harassment of a public official or employee and interference with official acts.
