A 25-year agreement with Alliant Energy is being considered by the City of Washington. Alliant Energy is looking to renew its franchise agreement with the City. Nancy Snaadt with Alliant Energy explained the agreement give the utility permission to work on the electric or gas system on city property, “It’s basically just an agreement that allows the utility to construct, maintain, and operate our system within the city’s streets, alleys, and other right of ways. And in turn, the utility agrees to provide safe, reliable service to the community. The Iowa Code defines explicitly what the conditions and requirements are. And standard franchise agreements are for a term of 25 years, enabling us to make these long term plans for large infrastructure investments.” The city attorney is reviewing the proposed agreement. It will be on the council’s next meeting agenda.
