Tristin Westphal defeats a Mt. Pleasant wrestler earlier in the season.
The number one story in our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2018-2019 school year for Washington takes us to a story book ending on the wrestling mat.
After years of coming up just short, the resilient Tristin Westphal-Edwards got his precious state title this past February in a senior year to remember. He rolled through his competition at 182 lbs all winter long and the trend continued at Wells Fargo Arena where he stood a top of the podium in class 2A. In the tournament the senior won by fall, 6-2 decision, 6-4 sudden victory, and took down top ranked Kyler Fisher of Southeast Valley in an exciting 6-5 decision in the championship match. With 24 seconds left in the final period Westphal-Edwards had an escape that proved to be the difference and capped off a perfect 43-0 season. He told KCII Sports it was the only thing on his mind in his fourth trip to state. “I have been more motivated this year as I haven’t got what I wanted in the last three years at the state tournament. I knew winning a state title is what I was wanting to do to cap off my high school career.” The graduating senior had quite the experience this summer competing overseas in Kosovo. He recently announced his commitment to Coe College this winter. To view our entire top 10 countdown find each story at kciiradio.com.
