The number of motorcycle fatalities in Iowa is lower than at this time last year. So far in 2019, there have been 27 motorcycle fatalities. By the end of August 2018 there were 38 motorcycle fatalities in the state. The total for 2018 was 42. Of the 27 fatalities this year, seven were wearing helmets, 18 were not, and two were unknown whether they were or were not wearing helmets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle riders are overrepresented in traffic fatalities and they urge drivers and motorcyclists to share the road and be alert. Always ride and drive sober.
