The Washington cross country team gears up for the season to start next week and another strong pack of runners make up the squad.

On the boys’ side it all starts with 2018 state qualifier Evan Horak. The senior finished 94thout of 131 runners last year in Fort Dodge and will try to make it three straight seasons with a Demon represented at state. Justin Simmering is out for the first time this year and was a part of the state qualifying 4x800m relay team in track this past spring. Sophomore Lance Sobaski and freshman Elijah Morris are other runners that make up the top four. On the girls’ side Abbi Voss returns for her senior campaign and will compete as a top runner and litte sister Gracie Voss will also be near the top in her freshman season. Josie Tanner, Tori Hinson, and Hannah Reese are other key returners for the team. Head Coach Stefanie Haworth tells KCII Sports what the training regimen looks like in the preseason. “Right now we are just getting some miles in and seeing where we are at. We have some newcomers and freshman that aren’t used to three miles so we are building our base mileage and developing race tactics. We have some great senior leaders that are helping the younger runners and setting the tone.”

The Demons open the season Tuesday at the Hillcrest Academy Early Bird Meet.
