Recent rain across most of Iowa has improved the state’s dry soil conditions. According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, cooler than normal temperatures have slowed crop development in the last week. Iowa’s topsoil moisture is rated at 2% surplus, 75% adequate, 20% short, and 3% very short. Topsoil is drier in the southeast district at 1% surplus, 54% adequate, 33% short, and 12% very short.
It’s a similar trend with subsoil moisture. The state is rated at 2% surplus, 74% adequate, 20% short and 4% very short. The southeast district’s subsoil moisture is 1% surplus, 43% adequate, 47% short, and 9% very short.
