Every win is sweet but a win against your rival on opening night might be a little sweeter. It was all smiles for the Sigourney-Keota football team on Friday night, as they rolled Pekin 34-14 in another edition of the Backyard Brawl.
Revenge was on the Cobras’ minds after dropping the last two in the series and giving up 300 yards rushing to Pekin’s Dayne Eckley in 2018. On Friday, the star runningback was held in check finishing with 135 yards on the ground after a few long runs late in the game. Cobra head coach Jared Jensen tells KCII Sports it was a total team effort containing Eckley and the Panther rushing attack. “We played great sound football. It wasn’t trying to make a play in the backfield it was I am going to hold my gap and do my job. Last year Eckley killed us on the sweep and on Friday Zeke Webb was a great edge setter. He didn’t make many tackles but he didn’t allow the sweep to get around him and forced Eckley to cut it up.” J.D. Stout led all backs with 169 yards on the ground including a four yard score late that extended the lead to 34-7 and put the game out of reach.
Sigourney-Keota moves to 1-0 and they host Lynnville-Sully on Friday for the home opener.
