The cross country season commenced last night in Kalona, as Hillcrest Academy hosted their annual early bird meet with a lot of area teams competing.

On the girls’ side Highland paced the area teams in third with 82 points while City High ran away with the title with 15. Washington was fourth with 94. The Huskies’ Madison Thomann cracked the top 10 in ninth with a time of 23:47 and Fiona Mahler was 14th in 25:11. The Demons’ top finish came from Abby Voss in 15th (25:43) and Grace Voss clocked in a second later in 16th (25:44). Lone Tree did not have a team score but Macie Bopp had an 11th place finish (24:13), Winfield-Mt. Union’s Avery Maeder was 19th (26:30), and WACO’s Grace Conwell was 24th (27:38).

The Washington boys’ team finished fourth on the day with 107 points, WMU was fifth with 126, and Cedar Rapids Jefferson claimed the top spot with 38. Washington’s Evan Horak picked up right where he left off from last year by claiming ninth place in 18:58 and Lance Sobaski was 14th in 19:08. Brody Barton led the Wolves in 16th (19:41) and Asa Gipple was 22nd (20:38). Other area finishes included WACO’s Jonah Egli in 15th (19:37), Lone Tree’s Alberto Cortes in 25th (21:25), and Highland’s Jacob Roling in 40th (23:13).
