The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team got their first win of the season with a statement on Friday, hammering the Pekin Panthers 43-0. The Golden Hawks scored touchdowns on their first three possessions. After a Pekin three and out it was a six play 38 yard drive that got the Hawks on the board when Brad Tornow broke free on a scramble for 14 yards to make it 7-0. Following a Pekin turnover, one of four for the Panthers in the first half, the Golden Hawks went up top when Tornow found Zeb Danner for a 50 yard touchdown to double the Golden Hawk lead. Another Pekin turnover turned into points after a four play 44 yard drive when Kayden Reinier found the end zone from six yards out.
Up 21-0, the Golden Hawks got the football out of halftime and marched 75 yards on eight plays with Tornow rushing for six from 22 yards out, a two point conversion on a broken play made it 29-0. The Golden Hawks enacted a running clock with a 13 play 72 yard drive finished with a Reinier four yard touchdown run to make it 36-0. In the game’s final two minutes, Mid-Prairie marched one more time, 10 plays covering 52 yards, finished with a Nathan Quinby six yard touchdown run to make it 43-0.
Mid-Prairie outgained Pekin 344 to 173 including 139 to 25 through the air. Tornow was eight of 15 for 139 yards and a touchdown. On the ground Reinier had 19 carries for 104 yards and a pair of scores. Jack Baker had six tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Mid-Prairie is now 1-1 on the year and will travel to Wilton Friday. Pekin is now 0-2 as they face Mediapolis next week.
