People can both ask for help and approach loved ones if they need help and begin a discussion to increase suicide prevention. Chris Betsworth with Hillcrest Family Services says suicide effects all ages. In addition to phone hotlines, he says there are also chat and text hotlines with counselors available, “Technology has allowed us to ensure accessibility across the age span. Suicide is something that effects everybody. It is the second-leading cause of death in individuals from ages 10 to 34, approximately.” Betsworth says there are some warning signs that people may recognize in a loved one, “Some of the most common ones can be either just talking about death, or specifically talking about having thoughts of killing themself. Sometimes individuals will engage in increased substance use, maybe more than they usually drink or more than they usually use. And one ofthe most key features is a feeling of hopelessness, just this utter deep-seeded feeling that they can’t possibly get better; and that’s one of the most key features in suicide attempts.”

Hillcrest Family Services provides crisis care in Washington County at the local emergency room during the day. And there are 24-hour care options, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK(8255) or Betsworth says if it is an emergency call 911 or go to the emergency room. Help is available all the time. Click here for information on Hillcrest’s crisis services.
