The State of Iowa is receiving $33 million to be used to improve bridges across the state. Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius explained the Iowa Department of Transportation was awarded funds from the competitive highway and bridge program grant, “The DOT was awarded $33,442,000, which is about a 55% cost share, or 77 bridge projects that were estimated at $61 million. We didn’t get exactly what we were asking for but we got 55% of that, or total cost of construction which is beneficial.” Thorius explained this relates to Washington County because some of those funds will be used on a bridge on 130th Street east of Wellman. He said they were seeking approximately $500,000 and will receive about $260,000 to replace the bridge. There is currently a posted weight-limit. Work will be done within the next three years.
