A second half surge fell short for the Columbus Community football team in a rare Monday night game, as Van Buren held them off 18-12 in week five action.
The Warriors scored the game’s first three touchdowns all in the second quarter and held an 18-0 lead at the break. The switch was turned for the Wildcats to start the second half scoring on the first drive with a 26-yard scoring strike from Bawi Uk to Jonathan Gonzalez. With six minutes remaining they inched closer when Tucker Bright found Will Schwab from 30 yards out that reached pay dirt. The Wildcats had an opportunity late in the fourth, but the drive stalled and the rally was put to a halt. Bright finished two of three through the air for 65 yards and Schwab ran for 54 yards on 13 carries.
Columbus drops to 1-5 on the season and gets back on the gridiron Friday at Mediapolis.
