The Highway 92 and South 12th T-intersection may see changes in Washington. At a workshop following the regular Washington City Council meeting Tuesday, discussion was had on how to improve that intersection. Mayor Jaron Rosien said there are different ways the problem area can be approached, “We can do it, if we want to. The cost could be $250,000 to $350,000 and it would be totally on our own, so it’s something that would take some time. There are other little details that include the recommendations to take those four lanes down to three, to have a turn lane that would be part of adding a stop sign.” If the city decided to install traffic lights it would be at the cost of the city.
Following a DOT study of the intersection near the United Presbyterian Home and Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Traffic Engineering Assistance Program provided recommendations. One was to widen the curb area on the northeast portion of the intersection to provide more space for large trucks turning to the north. Another recommendation said converting it to a three-lane road would have safety benefits. The council will continue conversations on the topic, but no formal action was taken.
