Football is a game of adjustments, and Solon did just that on Friday night to comeback and fight off a pesky Washington team to win 35-20 at Case Field.
In front of an energized crowd on Heroes Night, Washington punched the Spartans in the mouth in the first half with a two-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Stout and a 30-yard scoring strike over the top from Luke Turner to Ethan Hunt. The Demons built a 14-0 lead, but the story was the defense holding a potent Solon offense to four three and outs to start the game. The Spartans started to chip away getting on the board with a one yard touchdown run from Cam Miller and driving once again late in the half. Looking to tie it with a minute left, the Spartans coughed the ball up and it resulted in a 13-point swing when Turner scampered 40-yards to the house as time expired to take a 20-6 lead at the break. The switched was turned in the second half, as the Demon offense couldn’t get much going and Miller carried the Spartans to victory scoring 28 unanswered points. Head Coach James Harris tells KCII Sports what changed for Solon. “They got into a split back set and unfortunately we weren’t doing things fundamentally. We thought we coached them up at half. Their offense is tough and full of talented players. They won the second half so hats off to them.” Turner was 10 of 33 for 149 yards and a score. Hunt hauled in three passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. Trashaun Willis led the defense with 13 tackles.
Washington drops to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the district. Solon takes control of the league moving to 6-0, 2-0. The Demons look to rebound next week at Fort Madison.
