Southeast Iowa Super Conference Cross Country teams traveled to Fairfield on Monday to compete in the conference meet that was rescheduled from last week.
Columbus boys headlined the area squads with their best finish in eight years at the meet by placing fourth out of 16 teams. The Wildcats had 145 points and Pekin took home top honors with 39. Isaac Acosta once again led the way placing 18th out of 98 runners with a time of 18:58. Other top finishes included Freddy Vergara 28th(19:33) and Garrett Palmer 31st (19:43). Winfield-Mt. Union was right behind in fifth with 180 points. Brody Barton received all-conference placing 12th (18:24) and Dane Sweezer was 30th (19:34). Lone Tree was 11thwith 284 points and Alberto Cortes paced them in 32nd (19:49). Highland was 14th as a team (385) and Noah Oriano crossed the finish line in 68th (22:23). WACO and Hillcrest Academy did not have team scores, but the Warriors’ Jonah Egli received a medal in 11th (18:23) and the Ravens’ Colby Harris was 56th (21:05).
On the girls’ side Highland had a strong performance in fourth with 126 points and Pekin swept the competition with 37. Madison Thomann was a big reason for the Huskies’ success finishing fourth in 21:29. Fiona Mahler was 24th (23:54) and Taylor Sublette also cracked the top 30 in 27th (24:14). Hillcrest Academy place sixth as a team with 135 points and Leah Bontrager had the best overall area finish in third (21:07). Sarena Gerber also nabbed all-conference in 13th (22:48). WACO placed eighth with 192 points and Eryka Dickey was 26th(24:12). Columbus Community also had enough for a team score in 10th with 219 points led by Juvixsa Valdez in 39th (25:43). Other area finishes include Lone Tree’s Macie Bopp sixth (22:14) and WMU’s Avery Maeder 21st (23:31).
