The second set of rating percentage index (RPI) football rankings were released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and both Washington and Sigourney-Keota saw their stock rise.

The RPI is used to determine at-large bids for the playoffs and is calculated by a formula that involves the team’s record, their opponents’ record, and their opponents’ opponents’ record. The Demons (5-2) leapfrogged Mount Pleasant and moved up one spot to 15th in class 3A. Washington defeated Fort Madison 36-7 while the Panthers lost to Solon 35-14. Sigourney-Keota (7-0) stayed unbeaten by defeating Columbus Community 59-6 and they also moved up one spot to 14th in class 1A. If the Cobras can win district 5 they would automatically make the playoffs, but RPI would matter in the second round for determining the home site. Washington needs to keep winning and hope teams below them in the rankings don’t win their district.

Brackets will be released after week nine and involve a field of 16 teams for each class.
