Representatives of the City of Kalona and Shiloh met to discuss developments regarding possible property annexation on Monday. The group discussed possible future use of the primary building on the grounds. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Slabaugh broke down the conversation, “We talked about a current update, where we stand in respect to the building ideas and partners. We have had numerous public discussions with entities on utilizing the primary building. Some of those foundational partner efforts exploring costs didn’t make it beneficial enough for them to stay engaged. We went through some suggestions and ideas and ultimately, while we are still looking, most of our focus is now on the land, and allowing Shiloh to figure out what use that building has in  its current location and state would be.” Other topics that were discussed included possible development for recreation, annexation and easements, water, sewer, and trails. The City of Kalona has received two voluntary requests for annexation, one from Marilyn Farms and one from Shiloh, for the previously discussed land parcels. These are currently being reviewed by the city’s legal council and could be brought to the city council for recommendations as early as November.
