The record amount of snow in Washington for October was set this year with six inches. According to the National Weather Service, Washington received 3.2 inches of snow on Halloween with a snow depth of about four inches, setting the record for October 31st. Also on Halloween, the normal average temperature this year was 31.5 degrees, about 15 degrees below normal.

Field agronomist Rebecca Vittetoe says the weather this year has been a challenge for farmers and they shouldn’t be in the fields when conditions could cause ruts or soil compaction. She adds that recent weather can cause worries for crop loss , “On the grain side or on the harvesting side, when we have a snow like this and the temperatures get colder like this one of the things is if people still have soybeans out in the field that we worry about is that those soybean pods they could potentially freeze, and they could shatter, and we could maybe see some loss of the soybeans that way.”

The total precipitation for Washington in October is normally about 2.9 inches and this year it was 4.3 inches. The overall average temperature for the month was 48.3 degrees, below the normal average by four degrees. So far this year, Washington has had 38.2 inches of precipitation, nearly six inches above normal.
