The Winfield-Mt. Union cross country team appears to be in good hands for years to come, as they recently had an individual win state for middle school.
At the state meet in Ankeny, seventh grader Kohlby Newsom was the first to cross the finish line in class 1A with a two-mile time of 12:36. In the eighth grade race Gabriel Hemsworth led the Wolves in ninth (12:18). Columbus Community competed as a team and finished fourth out of 11 teams. Damian Vergara led the way in fourth (12:08). For the class 1A seventh grade girls race the Wildcats’ Ariana Vergara placed ninth (14:17).
The meet was the 26th annual Washburn Classic last month in Ankeny.
