A multi-million dollar project in the City of Washington received a boost in funding from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation Wednesday. At the fall grant presentation, WCRF President Tom Basten announced the $650,000 grant for the Washington Wellness Park.
City Administrator Brent Hinson shared his gratitude and said this phase of the project is about $2 million, “[We’ll] build the fields out the rest of the way to have a playable, very nice sports complex, essentially is what we’ll get out of this phase one. We’ll have a four-ballfield complex, concessions and restrooms building, two very large full-size soccer fields. We’ll have a trail extension from the Kewash Nature Trail all the way up through the Wellness Park. And then basically we’re setting the template for future phases.” Hinson said the plan is to have the project bid this winter and have work begin in the spring. The site already had $1 million in infrastructure placed earlier this year with mass grading, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water lines.
The Wellness Park will be located north of West 5th Street and south of the existing soccer fields on West 18th Street. It will be adjacent to where the new YMCA is being constructed.
