The 2019-2020 girls basketball season opens tonight at Winfield-Mt. Union, as the Wolves welcome New London for the first game of the year.

The Wolves were 5-17 a year ago and will need to replace their top two scorers. Jobey Malone could be one of the players to fill the void, as she averaged 4.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game as a freshman. The Tigers were 2-17 and they return their top scorer and rebounder in Layney Loyd. The senior tallied 8.9 points and 7 rebounds a night last season. WMU head coach Mitch Wachs tells KCII Sports the keys for the Wolves this season. “We have to cut down on the turnovers this year and value the ball. We also need to score better. I think we have some guards that can make some shots more so than the last two years and I think we will have a strong presence inside as well. I am looking to see how all of that balances out and these first couple games will tell a lot.”

The season gets underway at 6 p.m. tonight in Winfield.
