The 2019-20 basketball season opened in southeast Iowa Friday at Hillcrest Academy in Kalona when the Raven girls hosted English Valleys. The Bears went on the road and got the win 63-25. In a game heard on AM and FM KCII, EV led from the onset, starting the game on a 16-2 run and holding a 30-14 lead at the half. In the second half, the Ravens hung around on the strength of four three point goals from Yani Gutierrez but the Bears closed the game with 20 straight points, holding the Ravens scoreless in the final frame to seal the win. Gutierrez led Hillcrest with 12 points, Esther Hughes had nine. With the loss, the Ravens are now 0-1 on the year and travel to Tri-County Tuesday.
