Justice is on the ballot in the eyes of Kamala Harris who is running for the Democratic nomination for president. The Senator from California who formerly served as the District Attorney of San Francisco met with potential caucus-goers in Washington Saturday morning. She spoke of the different ways she sees justice as being on the ballot: environmental improvements, renewable energy, economic issues, access to healthcare, gun safety, and education. While speaking about the environment in which students learn, one elementary-aged boy toward the back of the room took notice, “So when in our country, our babies – elementary, middle school, high school students, are going to school to endure a drill during which they are taught about how to hide in a closet in the event that there’s a mass shooter roaming the hallways of our schools.” And that little boy asked, “My school?” Harris said, “Justice for our children is on the ballot.”
She said that the beauty of the American people is that we don’t cease looking forward at what could be, “This is the fight that is about what we believe is possible and then we make it possible. That we make it possible that we have healthcare for all people. That we make it possible that our kids go to school and feel safe. That we make it possible that you only have to work one job to have a roof over your head and put food on the table.” She was met with applause from the crowded room. She finished the event answering questions about affordable housing, affordable medications, and overall affordable living, and improving the environment.
