There was no shortage of drama in the season opener for the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team, as they edged New London 49-46 on Friday night.
The Wolves jumped out of the gates early with a 17-9 advantage after one. The Tiger defense stiffened in the second and third holding WMU to 18 points in that timeframe and they held a 39-35 lead after three. The Wolves kept chipping away and came back to win in part by the hot shooting of Jami Wilkerson. The junior finished with a game-high 18 points including four of eight behind the arc and also recorded six steals. Farrah Nelson cleaned up the boards with 12 rebounds and Keetyn Townsley had seven points in her freshman debut. The Wolves shot 37% from the floor and capitalized on 15-second chance points to New London’s four.
WMU starts the year 1-0 and gets back on the court tomorrow at Mediapolis.
