If you like fast pace basketball, look no further than the Washington boys this winter. The Demons wasted no time putting up points and ran Centerville out of the gym Monday night in an 89-51 season opening win.
As heard on KCII, the Demon offense was clicking from the start, but they had a hard time slowing down the Big Reds and led 22-20 after one. After a quick timeout by Washington early in the second, the flip was switched and the rout was on. A combination of easy transition points, a stifling full court press, and numerous offensive rebounds by Brock Sobaski and Trashaun Willis that set up second chance points spelled doom for the Big Reds and Washington held a 50-28 advantage at the break. The Demon roster that runs 10 deep continued to wear down Centerville in the second half and the game got out of hand. Five Demons finished in double figures led by Ethan Hunt with 20. Willis and Kasen Bailey each had 11 while Ethan Patterson and Trevor Quigley each had 10. Head Coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports he liked how his defense responded in the final three quarters. “In the first quarter I was upset with our defense. We then switched up some things and started to settle in. From the second quarter on we figured out our defense and that triggered easy points for our offense.”
The Demons start the year 1-0 and turnaround to play Iowa City Liberty at home tonight starting at 7:30 p.m. The Washington girls (1-0) play at the same time at Cedar Rapids Washington.
