The Washington girls basketball team had an opportunity to triumph over reigning Southeast Conference champs Fairfield for the first time in almost six years, but ran out of gas in the fourth and fell at home 61-48.
As heard on KCII, Fairfield took control early building a nine-point advantage in the second quarter by capitalizing off of a few Demon turnovers. Washington settled in utilizing the one-two punch down low with Addison Six and Olivia Pacha to only trail 24-23 at the break. The third quarter consisted of numerous lead changes with both teams finding an answer offensively. Washington held conference player of the year Shaylin Drish scoreless for 28 minutes, but the senior tallied all 12 points in the home stretch to salt the game away. Demon head coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports the Trojans know how to finish ball games. “The difference in the game was Fairfield has won three of the last five conference championships and they know how to win. We are a team that is trying to learn how to win basketball games. I think we are taking huge strides and we are a lot closer than a lot of teams think.” Six and Kellie Dallmeyer led the team with 10 points apiece. Washington falls to 1-2 on the season.
The Demon boys went on the road and humbled the Trojans 69-32. Brock Sobaski paced the team with 14 points and Kasen Bailey added 13. Washington improves to 2-1. The girls are on the road to Centerville on Monday and the boys travel to Burlington on Friday.
