The first week of the season was kind to the Sigourney basketball teams, as they combined to go 6-0 including a sweep on the road against English Valleys on Friday night.

The girls had their third blowout in a row with a 58-26 win over the Bears. They led 19-7 after one, 31-16 at the break, and continued to pile on in the second half to come away with the big win. Megan Stuhr led the way with 20 points and five steals, Makenna Hammes recorded 15 points, and Kaylee Weber added 13. The Savages have outscored their opponents 176-49 through three contests this year.

The boys had more of a grinded out victory with a 56-50 win after trailing 29-21 at the break. A big third quarter where they outscored the Bears 19-7 was the difference and head coach Mitch Eslick tells KCII Sports he was proud of how his team responded in the second half. “I have to give our kids a ton of credit. They were locked in during our second half adjustments and they executed everyone. We really exploited some things against their zone in the second half and got the ball inside.” Freshman Mason Harter paced Sigourney with 17 points and 12 rebounds, Levi Crawford had 11 points, and Cade Molyneux added 10.

Both teams are 3-0 and get back in action tomorrow hosting Iowa Valley.
