FFA and 4-H members will flock to Kalona with their cattle Saturday for the annual Market Beef Weigh-In. The weigh-in is at the Kalona Sale Barn from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Up to 10 calves may be weighed for both the county fair and out-of-county events. Washington County Fair Market Beef classes include purebred steers, crossbred steers, produce steers (produce of heifer or cow project in a previous year project), returning bucket bottle market heifer and steer, market heifer, dairy steer, and single source steer. Any bucket-bottle calf project shown at the 2019 fair and weighed in for the upcoming fair is eligible to be entered in the Returning Bucket Bottle Classes, Market Beef classes or the Dairy Steer class for the 2020 County Fair. Breeding heifers do not need to be weighed in at the December event.

Required information for the Iowa State Fair for purebred calves includes breed identified, sire name, sire registration number, and tattoo. For the county fair, purebred market calves need the breed identified, a signed affidavit from the producer saying the calf could be registered or registration papers. It is $1.50 per ear tag for all beef and retinal scanning will be done for those nominating for the state fair at $8 per head.
