The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams invaded Columbus Community High School on Friday night and walked away with a pair of wins in a battle of area teams.

In the girls game the Wolves controlled it from the opening tip, jumping out to a 15-4 lead after one and 31-13 at the break en route to a 48-17 victory. Jami Wilkerson paced the Wolves with 14 points and Farrah Nelson was cleaning up the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Lizbeth Paz led the Wildcats with eight points and Olivia Carrier nabbed eight boards. WMU shot 38% from the floor to Columbus’ 12%. The Wolves are now 2-4 and the Wildcats drop to 0-7.

The WMU boys utilized a big second half to pull away with a 52-37 win. The game was notched up at 20-20 at half, but outscoring the Wildcats 14-7 in the third and 18-10 in the fourth allowed them to create some separation. Christian Gerot was a big reason why with 18 points and five steals while Daunte Oepping recorded 11 points and seven assists. WMU improves to 2-2 and Columbus drops to 0-6.
