Don’t wreck the holidays, drive sober. The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are partnering to remove impaired drivers from the roads and help save lives. Motorists will see an increased presence of law enforcement through January 1st. As you prepare to celebrate the holidays with friends and family, make sure you have a designated sober driver. In 2017, 885 people died in traffic crashes involving a drunk driver during the month of December. Also, the average OWI infraction can set you back $10,000 in fees, fines, court costs, lost work, higher insurance rates, and more, according to the IDPS. Last year in Iowa from December 13th to January 1st, law enforcement officers arrested 506 impaired drivers and during that time there were 17 crashes killing 18 people, four of those wrecks involved an impaired driver. Celebrate the holidays and have a plan to get home safely.
