Two area girls basketball programs hit the hardwood in Sigourney last night and Washington spoiled the Savages’ perfect record with a 49-38 victory.

As heard on KCII, both teams had a hard time settling in early with Washington holding a 12-9 advantage after one and 21-18 at the break. The defensive intensity was cranked up for the Demons in the second half and stretched the lead to as much as 15 early in the fourth. The culmination came late in the third when the Savages were called for back-to-back charging calls that led to Demon points. Washington head coach Shannon Rugg loved what he saw in the final 16 minutes. “Our girls dug in and got after it. This group is starting to figure it out and I like what is going on. They don’t care about their stats and just want the team to win.” Addison Six paced the Demons with 13 points and Halle Leyden had 12. Megan Stuhr and Kaylee Weber led Sigourney with 14 points apiece.

Washington improves to 4-2 and travels to Mount Pleasant Friday. Sigourney drops to 5-1 and has a quick turnaround making the short trip to Keota tonight.
