The Highland Huskies hosted Wapello Friday night and split a Southeast Iowa Superconference basketball doubleheader with the Indians and Arrows. In the girls contest Wapello took a 55-20 victory. The Arrows were too much early, starting the game on a 21-2 run that lasted the entire first quarter. They would roll through the second quarter on a 15-3 run that lasted the entire frame to take a 36-5 lead into the break. In the second half, the Arrows maintained control, winning the third quarter 15-10 and put the game out of reach. Wapello was led by 21 points from Holly Massner. With the loss, the Highland girls are now 1-7.
The Highland boys got by the Indians 51-41. The difference in the game was how the Huskies finished each half. After trailing 14-13 at the end of one quarter, Highland outscored Wapello 12-7 in the second to take a 25-21 lead into the break. Out of the locker room the two teams were even, but down the stretch Highland outscored the Indians 16-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away and take the win. Mason McFarland paced the Huskies with 19 points, Zack Lasek went double double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. With the win, Highland improves to 4-1. The Highland boys and girls will be back on the court tonight when they travel to Winfield-Mt. Union.
