It was a Southeast Iowa Superconference sweep for the Wapello boys and girls basketball teams over Hillcrest Academy Tuesday night in Wapello. The Arrows handled the Ravens by a 66-20 score in the girls game. Wapello held a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, scored the game’s first 24 points and kept the Ravens off the board entirely for the first 10 minutes of the contest. The stifling Wapello defense forced 34 turnovers in the matchup. The score stood at 40-10 at the half. The Arrows enacted the running clock midway through the third quarter before taking the 46 point win. Yani Gutierrez led the Ravens with eight points, Eryka Dickey led the Arrows with 16 points. The Hillcrest girls are now 1-6, Wapello is 5-1.
In the boys contest, Wapello never trailed, starting the game on a 10-0 run and finishing a 57-43 win over the Ravens. After opening up the early lead, Hillcrest answered back, putting in eight in a row to pull within two but would get no closer the rest of the night, down 22-14 at half, the Ravens saw the Indians stretch the lead to 18 in the second half behind a tremendous performance from sophomore Maddox Griffin who poured in 27 points, 22 of those in the second half. The Indian defense also held down Eli Ours, the leading scorer for the Ravens and number six in class 1A entered the night averaging 24 per game, he finished with seven points, all coming in the fourth quarter. John Hughes and Kobe Borntrager led Hillcrest with a dozen points each. The 12 points from Hughes are a career high. With the loss, the Ravens fall to 2-3 on the year, Wapello improves to 2-3. The Ravens will next be on the floor on Friday when they host Winfield-Mt. Union for Alumni Night at Hillcrest Union.
