Two janitors at Columbus Community Schools have been arrested after giving a student drugs and alcohol. According to the Columbus Junction Police Department, on December 18th police were called to a residence in Columbus Junction for a missing juvenile. It was determined that a 15-year-old girl had run away. She was found in distress and impaired on the Swinging Bridge. A negotiator from the Muscatine Police Department assisted and was able to get the juvenile off the bridge. She was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement determined the juvenile had been at the high school and then went to an apartment in Columbus Junction. The apartment belonged to 53-year-old Kimberly Butterbaugh and 49-year-old James Huber. The pair was contracted with ABM Janitorial Services. On December 20th a search warrant was executed at the apartment and items consistent with the victim’s accounts were found. Those items included drug paraphernalia, bottles of whiskey, and prescription medication. Butterbaugh and Huber were arrested and charged with distribution of a scheduled II substance to a minor, child endangerment, possession of prescription pills, providing alcohol to a minor, distribution of tobacco to a minor, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Further items are being tested at the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations Laboratory. The Columbus Junction Police Department was assisted by the Columbus Junction Fire Department, Louisa County Ambulance, Muscatine Police Department, Louisa County Attorney’s Office, and the Louisa County Sheriffs’ Office.

Preliminary hearings for Butterbaugh and Huber have been scheduled for December 31st.

This is not the first time either has been arrested. In 1989, Butterbaugh was found guilty of delivery of cocaine in Johnson County. In 1999, she was found guilty of theft in the fifth degree in Fayette County. And in 2001, Butterbaugh plead guilty in Washington County to simple domestic abuse assault. Huber was found guilty of possession of a controlled substance in Johnson County courts in both 2009 and 2012.
