After tabling a construction plan for the Lone Tree High School gym, the Lone Tree board of education killed the project altogether at their meeting this month. Plans were conceived in late summer for upgrades to the south entrance of the gym that included both enhanced safety measures and improved aesthetics and functionality. Bids were accepted and the board settled on a low bid of $627,000 from McComas and Lacina Construction in Iowa City, just before Halloween. A November board meeting saw a vote on the project that was attended by residents of the community that voiced concern over the price tag of the work and the return on investment for the district. At that meeting a 3-2 vote was taken that tabled the project. With community members on hand this month, voicing many of the same concerns, the board voted unanimously to stop the project. Their plan is to enter 2020 by focusing on compiling a list of future projects for the district at a January work session. The board had already spent more than $85,000 on architectural design work for the now scrapped project.
