Soil sample results allowed the Highland School Board to continue progress toward a Wastewater Treatment System Facility solution. At their recent meeting Mark Wildman, with the engineering firm HR Green, shared with the school board that samples taken from the Highland campus in an area that could possibly hold a leach field showed that the plat is not a viable option for filtering wastewater. The issue with the area is that below the topsoil is a layer of clay that does not allow water to pass through. With this new information, the board submitted a facility plan to the DNR that lists several options to move forward, but not one specific solution. Those options include a mechanical plant and a Submerged Attached Growth Reactor (SAGR). The district is not currently in compliance with ammonia and E. Coli parameters set forth by the DNR and has until July of 2022 to reach compliance.
