In the last 20 years, the number of cremation interments has more than quadrupled in the Washington cemeteries while the number of full burials has decreased. According to Nick Duvall with the City of Washington, the Elm Grove and Woodlawn cemeteries had 65 full burials and nine cremation interments in the year 2000 and last year there were 44 full burials and 32 cremation interments, down by five from 2018. In his year-end report, Duvall states the average interments per year is 82.5 and it was down slightly in 2019 at 76. He adds that as the ratio increases with more cremations, the revenue the cemetery generates will decrease.
