For the first time in their tenure, the WACO Esports team will be competing in February. WACO is one of 26 districts in the state with an Esports team. Drew Ayrit, the District Technology Coach and Esports Coach, told KCII News some of the upcoming events that his team will be competing in, “We got a Rocket League team that’s going to be competing in the Iowa High School Esports Association this spring. Our first match is not until the week of February 17th.” Ayrit also tells KCII News about pitching the idea to the school board and their ambitious desire to be the first school in the area to do this, “There were lots of questions about it, and just what it was, and why we should be getting into it. I think though once everything was laid out to them, and we looked at statistics and just trends that we could all kind of just see it was growing. And it was gaining momentum, and that sooner or later it was going to be coming to high school so why not be one of the first schools in the district to embrace it and really start to put a program together.”

The Esports Association is currently in their first official season of play and are allowing students to compete in video games such as Rainbow Six Siege, League of Legends, and Rocket League. To see the team in action stop by WACO High school on Thursday nights starting February 20th where the WACO team will compete in the inaugural Rocket League season.
