Due to the weather, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and West Liberty Comets stepped back in time for a River Valley Conference doubleheader at West Liberty Jr. High. That gym and building served as the High School facility from the 1970s through the mid 2000s. The Golden Hawks split the double dip with the Comets. The Mid-Prairie girls fell by a 39-33 score. West Liberty raced out of the gates, starting the game on a 14-2 run that lasted the entire first quarter. From there the Golden Hawk defense dug in, shutting out the Comets completely in the second quarter while the offense tried to get on track. West Liberty was on top 14-8 at the half. In the second half, the drought continued for the Comets, as they went scoreless from the field for the first five minutes of the third and a total of 14 consecutive minutes in all. Mid-Prairie used that slow start to tie the game at 17, but the Comets answered with a 15-2 run. Down double digits for a second time, Mid-Prairie rallied late on back to back threes from Myah Lugar to get within six but West Liberty held on down the stretch for the win. Lugar led the Hawks with 16 points. With the loss, Mid-Prairie is now 4-7 overall.

The Mid-Prairie boys scored their third win of the season by a 64-35 score. The Hawks never trailed in the victory, getting out to a 14-4 start, the Hawks led 22-7 after one quarter and 40-23 at the half. The lead would stretch to as large as 33 in the second half. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert talked about the team victory and what he saw. “Really selfless basketball. Both ends of the floor. Guys making the extra pass. It’s fun to see guys come out, have success, fill their roles and have smiles on their faces.”

Nine different Golden Hawks scored on the night with Carter Harmsen scoring 19 to lead the way. The Hawks are now 3-7 on the year. The Mid-Prairie boys and girls will be back in action Saturday against Monticello in Wellman.
